Salzburg Seminar: Realizing the Doha Development Round as if the Future Mattered
Earlier this year, several IPC members participated in a special Salzburg Seminar on February 16-21 in Salzburg, Austria to re-energize the commitment of all parties to complete the Doha Round, and to find ways to unblock the negotiations.
Participants in the seminar actively debated and discussed issues in the current trade round, and left with the understanding that if an agreement is not reached by the end of 2007, the Doha Round could be moribund for five years or more, with major geo-political repercussions. Among their recommendations were that they urged the G-8 and leaders in the developed world to:
- Renew and recommit to the vision behind the Doha Development Round;
- Break open the negotiating process;
- Broaden the meaning of “development”;
- and Commit to WTO Reforms.
The summary and key points of this seminar have just been released- access them here:
This seminar was organized by the Hewlett Foundation, the German Marshall Fund of the United States, and the Salzburg Seminar.
