An EU Perspective — "WTO Negotiations on Agriculture: Impact on Developed and Developing Countries"

Presented by Anastassios Haniotis, Head of Unit, Agricultural Trade Policy Analysis Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development European Commission

Washington, DC
March 27, 2006
Anastassios Haniotis discussed how international agricultural trade includes the cumulative effects of both subsidies and market access. Both create trade distortions and both areas have to be disciplined. He discussed how the EU believes that the level of market access ambition has to be determined mutually, where everybody looks at the overall balanced situation, both within agriculture and also between agriculture and the other sectors.
