Beyond Oil & Gas: African Growth and Opportunity Act's Benefits to Africa

The International Food & Agricultural Trade Policy Council (IPC), along with the Partnership to Cut Hunger and Poverty in Africa sponsored the participation of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) in a hearing of the Subcommittee on African and Global Health. The hearing focused on the African Growth and Opportunity Act's impact to date, and recommendations for improving the impact of US-Africa trade policy and trade capacity building programs. Speakers included Florizelle Liser, Assistant US Trade Representative for Africa, USTR, Mr. Sindiso Ngwenya, Assistant Secretary General of COMESA, Ms. Katrin Kuhlmann, senior vice president for Global Trade at Women's Edge Coalition, and Mr. Stephen Hayes, president of the The Corporate Council on Africa.
The hearing was followed by a luncheon discussion sponsored by The Partnership to Cut Hunger and Poverty in Africa, IPC, The German Marshall Fund, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, on improving regional trade and economic growth in Africa. At this luncheon discussion, Mr. Ngwenya highlighted the progress and benefits of Africa’s regional trade integration, and how AGOA can help enhance these gains. He also made comments on the WTO negotiations and the future outlook for Africa.
