This seminar sought the most effective policy mix to promote the compatibility of agriculture and the environment, while simultaneously supporting international trade. Stressing that the health of the environment and the economy were interlocked, the seminar focused on trade, domestic policies and agribusiness imperatives and featured a presentation by British Agricultural Minister, John Gummer, who called for further reform of the Common Agricultural Policy to make improved environmental performance by farmers a pre-condition for receiving direct income support.
